Biosketch

Maria João Alcoforado (MJA) is a researcher from the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG/ IGOT/ULisboa) and Editor of Finisterra (2000-2015). She is member of the Zephyrus research group and was Full professor of the IGOT (now retired). Her main study areas are Geography and Environment, particularly Urban climate including its application to urban planning and its relation with Climate Change; Human comfort and its perception; Climatology applied to tourism and agricultural issues. MJA has coordinated several research projects and supervised numerous Master and PhD thesis. MJA has published in several peer reviewed international journals , such as Advances in Meteorology , Applied Geography, Climatic Change, Climate Research, Climates of the Past, Environmental Health Perspectives, International Journal of Biometeorology, International Journal of Climatology, Science Data, Theoretical and Applied Geography and The Holocene.

MJA was member of the Jury of the Vautrin Lud Prize from 2009 to 2014, of the Expert team 9 on Urban Climatology and Training from the World Meteorology Organization and of several international associations (IAUC, IGU, ISB, AIC).
