Biosketch

Jorge UMBELINO is a geographer (1982), MSc (1987) , PhD (1997) and “Agregado” (2012) in Geography and Territorial Planning (New University of Lisbon).

He is currently a Full Professor at the Estoril Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotel Studies (ESHTE), Portugal, and a researcher at the Center for Tourism Research, Development, and Innovation (CiTUR) and at the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG).

His current scientific interests are tourism, tourism planning and accessible tourism. He has presented over 100 oral communications at scientific and professional meetings and publishes regularly, both books (Planeamento e Desenvolvimento Turístico, 2017; Sustainable Tourism, 2000: Lazer e Território, 1999), and journals (ex: Finisterra, Enlightening Tourism – A Pathmaking Journal, Sustainability, Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Journal of Teaching in Travel &Tourism, Revista Turismo & Desenvolvimento, Estudios y Perspectivas en Turismo, European Journal of Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation.

Jorge has played some academic roles, including National Director of CiTUR, Chairman of the Technical-Scientific Council of ESHTE and Director of the scientific journal GeoINova. Outside the academy, he held some leadership positions, such as President of the Institute for Tourism Training, Member of the Board of the National Authority for Tourism and Deputy-Director for Tourism.
